Elul Beit Midrash: Teshuvah Comes from the Depths

With Rabbi Dianne Cohler-Esses
This class will take place on Tuesdays between 7:00 PM and 8:30 PM.
Dates: August 18, August 25, September 1
Zoom link and JTS details will be sent at registration.
“Teshuvah comes from the depths—from a great depth in regard to which the individual human spirit is not a self-contained entity but a continuum of the great universal being.”
— Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, Lights of Teshuvah
In this three-session Beit Midrash (Study hall), we will begin with moving into awareness: recognizing the fullness of who we are at this moment and by asking: What are we reaching for? What does the path look like? Jewish sacred texts on teshuvah, together with related literature from other traditions, will deepen our exploration, inviting us inward and opening new landscapes for discovery. As a study community, we will create space for new insights, contemplation and conversation—and together we might even witness the emergence of new ways of being.
Elul Park Clean Up with Rabbi Jill Hammer and the Riverside Park Conservancy

September 2, 2026, 9:30 AM at Cherry Walk at 100th St and Hudson River Greenway
Every year, Romemu celebrates tashlich, the ritual of casting away and we utilize Riverside Park. You can honor the service by joining the Romemu community park clean-up supervised by the Parks Department’s partner: the Riverside Park Conservancy. After a teaching by Rabbi Jill Hammer, participants will help cast away trash before the Jewish new year begins. There will be a potluck lunch after the cleaning organized by Iva Kaufman.
Our cleaning up the park helps keep the river free of garbage and allows us to be in reciprocal relationship with the beautiful land we use each year. We hope this Jewish month of Elul clean-up will be a Romemu sacred exchange appreciating the flowing waters and recognizing we are part of making the earth a beautiful place.
Volunteer This High Holy Days

Chesed (lovingkindness) is an integral part of our community all year. The High Holy Days offer a special opportunity for chesed acts. Some of our members need help during the High Holy Days, whether that’s a ride, a walking partner, or a friendly greeter at the door. If you’ll be onsite and able to assist, register below.
Live Taping of Detours and Destinations with Eboo Patel: From Boundaries to Bridges

September 3, 2026 , 7:30 PM at 92NY, 1395 Lexington Ave, NYC
In a live taping of his podcast, Detours & Destinations, Rabbi David sits down with Patel in a conversation drawing on decades of experience doing the difficult work of bridging deep divides. Through personal stories and practical wisdom, they explore what it takes to build a more cohesive community in an increasingly fragmented world. Along the way, they will examine how faith can play an instructive role in America’s future, what we can learn from our nation’s past achievements in pluralism, and why our ability to cooperate across lines of fundamental difference still holds the key to our collective flourishing.
Jewish Recovery Fellowship: 12 Step

Romemu is reopening our Jewish recovery fellowship for anyone seeking freedom from addiction of any kind.
What it is: An anonymous 12-step group following the traditions of AA, drawing on Jewish spiritual wisdom from Jewish 12-step recovery texts, Torah, Mussar teachings, and other Jewish wisdom throughout the ages.
Who it’s for: Anyone struggling with addiction—whether you’re at the beginning of your journey, have been sober for years, months, or are taking it one day at a time. Anyone supporting someone in recovery. Anyone seeking a Jewish perspective on the 12 steps. Jewish or not, you’re welcome.
We’re just starting: Email 12step@romemu.org to join our group and help build this community. We’re planning to meet in person once or several times monthly.
