Kehillah (Community)
Walking into Romemu has always felt like being embraced as our full selves, without judgement, and into loving, spiritual, genuine arms.
Romemu is a welcoming, holistic, energizing, and calming community. I ALWAYS feel better after a service, it's like a workout for my soul.
Romemu can be defined as many things – a synagogue, a learning center, a religious organization – but more than anything, Romemu is defined by our community. We are people from all walks of life with diverse backgrounds and identities who join together on a common journey of spiritual growth.
Founded in 2006 on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, we rapidly grew from a small group meeting in Rabbi Ingber’s home to hundreds gathering in the Romemu Sanctuary in the West End Presbyterian Church. Today, Romemu Manhattan occupies our growing campus with the the Romemu Sanctuary in the Church – our home for communal prayer services– and the Romemu Center – our home for adult educational programming, Seekers Holistic Hebrew School, the Romemu Yeshiva, administrative offices, and other programs and events in Manhattan.
Having experienced Romemu Manhattan, others have sought to replicate it closer to their homes, leading to the creation of Romemu Brooklyn.
Romemu Westchester provides a monthly opportunity for people in the area who love Romemu to gather and connect locally for Kabbalat Shabbat services and dinner.
Reaching beyond our walls to the wider world has long been integral to Romemu, with our services, classes, and holiday celebrations shared online. The COVID-19 pandemic drove our physical communities fully online, opening up many more opportunities for people to engage with Romemu from anywhere. This has created a flourishing Romemu Global community that we continue to nourish and grow.

“All the services and programs highlighted in this report were only possible because of the investment you made in our shared community. The impact of your support on spiritual seekers in New York and around the world is evident in the messages Romemu’s clergy and staff receive regularly, a small sampling of which is included in this report.”
– Executive Board Co-Chairs, Jonathan B. Fassberg & Staci Levine
Romemu is a very important part of our lives – we feel connected in so many ways to this very special community.
