Support for Asylum Seekers

Romemu is partnering with parents at P.S.145M to raise urgent funds to help sustain P.S. 145’s asylum-seeking families from Central America, South America, and Ukraine along with all of the families of students living in temporary housing, 16.5% of 460 student community.
Right now P.S. 145 teachers and staff are taking laundry home weekly to ensure asylum-seeking students and families have clean clothes. The school was highlighted this past Sunday on 60 Minutes in this segment. Watch the segment here.
The immediate need is for laundry vouchers. $50 will help a family pay for one month of laundry; $150 for three months. Our goal with the P.S. 145M community is to raise $16,000 through this fund. In addition to laundry, we will help sustain asylum-seeking families with hot, healthy meals and phone data plans as funds allow.
We hope to surpass our fundraising goal and will continue to assess the needs of all of P.S. 145 families living in temporary housing and help sustain them where we can.
All donations to the Asylum Seekers Relief Fund are fully tax-deductible and 100% of the funds collected will go directly to families in need.
Thank you for your generosity.
Romemu was honored to host many families currently seeking asylum for a pre-Thanksgiving dinner organized by P.S. 145. View more photos here.

More Ways to Help

Romemu is working on multiple fronts to support new asylum seekers in our community as well as continuing our efforts to support all our neighbors in need. Current initiatives include:
  • The Romemu/Mandala Cafe Community Kitchen provides meals for all individuals and families in our local community in need, including newly arrived asylum seekers. View upcoming Community Kitchen dates and volunteer here.
  • An English class for newly arrived asylum seekers is meeting twice a week at the Romemu Center. The class is being taught by Romemu member, David Willinger, who is generously donating his time and expertise.
  • The Romemu Social Action Committee is working with Ruth Refuge to resettle immigrant families. During the last weekend of October, which was Global Diversity Awareness Month, resettled two families into apartments in the Bronx. The mission was a success! These families now have what they need to settle comfortably into their homes.
Support these initiatives:
  • Sponsor of a day of the Community Kitchen ($500) or a Social Action Committee program ($360). Sign up for a sponsorship here.
  • Make a donation of any amount (no amount is too large or too small). Donate here. Select the “Rabbi Rivera Social Action Fund”.
